You’ve seen it all over the news and social media; the keto diet is the new, trending diet of this year. Here’s what you need to know about it.

What is the Keto Diet?

The latest health and dietary trend is the keto diet, a low-carb, high fat diet that aims to put your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis. Ketosis enables your body to use fat for energy, instead of carbohydrates from sugar by producing ketones, or small molecules that are alternative fuel sources for the body when sugar (glucose) is in short supply. Ketones are produced by the liver when you eat very few carbs, moderate amounts of protein, and large amounts of fat.

Benefits of the Keto Diet

According to Harvard Health Publishing, previous research shows good evidence of faster weight loss when patients go on a ketogenic or very low carbohydrate diet, compared to participants on a more traditional low-fat diet, or even a Mediterranean diet. Further, a ketogenic diet has been shown to “improve blood sugar control for patients with type-2 diabetes, at least in the short term.”

Harvard’s blog further explains that there is “solid evidence” showing that a ketogenic diet “reduces seizures in children, sometimes as effectively as medication. Because of these neuro-protective effects, questions have been raised about the possible benefits for other brain disorders, such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, autism and even brain cancer.”

Supporting A Keto Lifestyle

There are some supplements that can further support a high-fat, low-carb diet. A carb neutralizer with an ingredient like Phase 2®, which is a registered patent of an extract from Phaseolus vulgarus, a fiber-based, clinically-proven weight loss product that is sourced from non-GMO white kidney beans. Phase 2® White Kidney Bean Extract may have great benefits for weight loss, when used in conjunction with a proper diet and exercise regimen. Phase 2® supports metabolism of the starch found in many of your favorite foods, which helps to fight excess carbohydrate absorption into the body. Normally, your body absorbs the calories from carbohydrates and stores them as fat. Phase 2® allows these extra calories to pass directly through your system instead of storing them as fat, contributing to healthy microflora along the way as well.†

Whenever you cut out certain foods as part of your diet, you are limiting key nutrients for your body. It is important to make sure that you are using supplements in order to get those nutrients in another form. One supplement that you should be taking on the keto diet is Benfotiamine. Benfotiamine is the more bioavailable and lipid-soluble form of Thiamin (Vitamin B1). Its bioavailability lends to improved concentrations in the brain, nerve tissues, and muscle. It is needed by muscle tissue for energy production which is especially important for an organ as energetic and active as your heart muscle. Benfotiamine supports transketolase activity, a key enzyme in the formation of what may be the body’s most functional age-defying metabolite; NAD/NADH. Benfotiamine may also support kidney health, while helping to protect organs and systems from the damaging effects of elevated sugar in the blood.†
