Ask Rick Longenecker: A Spotlight on Testosterone

Earlier this week I popped into our Downtown Manhattan store to say “Hi” to the team! A male client walked in and approached Rick with a few questions about testosterone levels. Here are some tips Rick shared that may be beneficial to the adult male population with “Low T”.

Is low testosterone a sign of aging?

If by that you mean is my quality of life going to diminish, the answer is no, if you take the appropriate corrective measures. Firstly, testosterone is the primary male hormone and it is fairly sensitive to be converted into other hormones.

What are some signs or symptoms of low testosterone?

The symptoms have a tendency to creep up slowly, so they are commonly ignored for months or even years. They are also ubiquitous, affecting almost everything in the male. Testosterone affects brain, muscles, bone, blood, heart. Symptoms include mental fogginess, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, loss of muscle, weight gain, diabetes, loss of interest in most things, and of course, loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.

Why does it decline?

Many hormones diminish with age and the reasons are complex. Bodies age. You can, however influence how rapidly or slowly that decline occurs by the choices you make.

At what level should it be?

As stated above, if you’re under 400 you should think about a strategy for maximizing.

What foods should I be eating to increase my testosterone levels?

Cholesterol is a building block for our sex hormones, so eggs in moderation are great food. Statin drugs to lower cholesterol can work against you when it comes to low testosterone. Low fat diets and vegan diets are generally not so good. Variation on a Mediterranean diet is as good a place to start as any. Most nuts are rich in L-arginine, which is a precursor for nitric oxide, which is important for blood flow. Good blood flow is crucial for good erections. Raw nuts are better than roasted. Olive oil and avocados boost testosterone.

Are there any supplements that would help?

There is a lot that can be done holistically and nutritionally to improve prostate health, without drugs and certainly without surgery.

An important point I make is that if the whole person is tired, they’ll be tired “below the deck” too. Unmanaged high stress, over-training, lack of sleep all diminish testosterone levels. With so many men dealing with the limitations of “Low T” and the symptoms that accompany this issue, holistic medicine offers so many safe and effective nutrients that address the problems at its core. Speak with me or another nutritionists at InVite® for help to your specific questions today.

  • Rik, I need to raise my testosterone level. My girlfriend can’t seem to get enough of me. How can I increase my level so I can keep up with her? She is from Nicaragua and she can’t keep her hands off me for over 40 years.

    • Hi Hugh. According to Rik’s tips, “What foods should I be eating to increase my testosterone levels?

Masculine HX: Prevents the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, which is crucial in prevention of prostate cancer and has the added benefit of keeping testosterone levels optimized. Men’s Edge: This contains the testosterone liberating herbs mentioned above and has a good shot of L-arginine. Zinc Picolinate: An important building block.
