Healthy Tips from our Scientific Director, Jerry Hickey, R. Ph
There is a slowing of brain function that naturally occurs in us as we age. This occurs for two reasons. There is a drop in the concentration of growth factors that repair spaces between nerves (known as the synaptic region). This leads to a slowing of healing of the synapse and a decrease in the efficiency of nerve transmission and therefore cell-to-cell communication falters. Also, the numerous tiny power plants found in each nerve cell become old and wrinkled and their efficiency decreases therefore decreasing the creation of energy in the brain. These tiny power plants are called mitochondria.
Mitochondria and Brain Health
As it turns out, we can retool these mitochondria restoring energy production in the brain. When you restore energy production you improve efficiency. When the brain has the energy and efficiency, healing can take place. You literally restore the ability to heal the brain, which restores some level of function to its neurons (the brains nerve cells). This also protects the brain from the increased level of toxic free radicals that are generated as we age and are part of the process leading to deteriorating brain function and loss of cognitive function that result in poor memory.
Nutrients to Protect your Brain and Memory
With the proper cocktail of nutrients that address the health of these tiny power plants you can protect your brain, improve its health and restore mental energy. You will eventually notice an improvement in focus, attention span, creativity, energy, memory and learning skills, and an improved mood. This is especially true if you eat the right foods and take the correct supplements. You are literally turning back the hands of time on an aging brain by improving energy production and healing, therefore improving brain metabolism. [Read more about Energy by clicking here!]
The nutrients ALCAR, ALA, and Ubiquinol are true mitochondrial nutrients restoring function to brain cells by improving energy production and metabolism. DHA is the fat from fish that helps protect, restore, and improve the health and functionality of the brain. Foods very high in antioxidant value such as blueberries, spinach and Spirulina also help by improving the rate of healing in the brain. The nutrients and foods will literally restore the level of growth factors that heal the space between nerve cells. Healing these synaptic regions is very important for restoring all manner of brain function. By improving energy production and metabolism and by restoring the ability to heal you truly reverse aging in the brain to a degree and this of course is superior to just slowing the aging process down.
