Today, I have some really exciting information to share with you about omega-3 fatty acids! They are in the news once again and I am going to tell you all about this latest research, plus why omega-3 fatty acids are so critical to our overall existence. Generally speaking, because many Americans follow a Standard American Diet, our bodies are lacking omega-3 fatty acids, along with numerous other essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. So this is extremely important.
Recent Studies on Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Brain Health
A recent study was funded through the National Institute of Health and published through the American Academy of Neurology that was looking at the intake of omega-3 fatty acids from the diet of women who lived in high areas of air pollution and figuring out if that intake would counteract the effects of air pollution on the brain. When we think about air pollution, it common to initially think about its impact on your lungs or on your skin. But it is important to note that air pollution can also impact the health of our brain.
In this particular study, researchers studied over 1300 women who’s average age was right around 70 years old. No one in this study had dementia. The study participants completed a questionnaire regarding their diet, which looked at their physical activity, their medical history and (most importantly) they were calculating the average amount of fish the women were consuming on a regular basis. Researchers concluded that the women who had the highest level of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood from consumption of fish, also had the greatest volume of the hippocampus, which controls memory, cognition and all of our functional abilities.
In a separate study, published in the journal of Neurology, researchers performed functional MRIs in order to determine whether a higher adherence to the Mediterranean Diet would be related to a healthy brain volume. Researchers determined that the Mediterranean Diet was indeed the healthiest diet out there. Here’s why this diet is so important and beneficial. The researchers analysed that the participants who had that strong adherence to the Mediterranean Diet had significantly greater brain volume. At the end of the day, your diet can make a huge impact on your health and overall wellness.
