Today, I have some really exciting information to share with you about omega-3 fatty acids! They are in the news once again and I am going to tell you all about this latest research, plus why omega-3 fatty acids are so critical to our overall existence. Generally speaking, because many Americans follow a Standard American Diet, our bodies are lacking omega-3 fatty acids, along with numerous other essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. So this is extremely important.

Recent Studies on Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Brain Health

A recent study was funded through the National Institute of Health and published through the American Academy of Neurology that was looking at the intake of omega-3 fatty acids from the diet of women who lived in high areas of air pollution and figuring out if that intake would counteract the effects of air pollution on the brain. When we think about air pollution, it common to initially think about its impact on your lungs or on your skin. But it is important to note that air pollution can also impact the health of our brain.

In this particular study, researchers studied over 1300 women who’s average age was right around 70 years old. No one in this study had dementia. The study participants completed a questionnaire regarding their diet, which looked at their physical activity, their medical history and (most importantly) they were calculating the average amount of fish the women were consuming on a regular basis. Researchers concluded that the women who had the highest level of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood from consumption of fish, also had the greatest volume of the hippocampus, which controls memory, cognition and all of our functional abilities.

In a separate study, published in the journal of Neurology, researchers performed functional MRIs in order to determine whether a higher adherence to the Mediterranean Diet would be related to a healthy brain volume. Researchers determined that the Mediterranean Diet was indeed the healthiest diet out there. Here’s why this diet is so important and beneficial. The researchers analysed that the participants who had that strong adherence to the Mediterranean Diet had significantly greater brain volume. At the end of the day, your diet can make a huge impact on your health and overall wellness.

Utilizing Fish Or Kill Oil Supplements

You want to make sure that your supplement is sourced environmentally correct. You also want to make sure that it goes through the proper distillation process, removing any type of impurities from that fish or krill oil. You will want to use a supplement that boasts the highest-quality, highest-purity and highest-potency.

In part one, I discussed the benefits of fish oil for brain health. Now, we are going to discuss Krill Oil’s superior benefit for brain health. Let’s get started.

What is Krill Oil?

Krill oil has fish oils attached to Phosphatidylcholine and also contains the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin. This has many advantages and even more benefits for the brain than fish oil.

Fatty ocean fish and crustaceans have omega-3 fatty acids which are commonly referred to as fish oils. You take Fish Oil capsules for their omega-3 content but you can also take Krill Oil because of it’s Omega-3 Content. However, Krill – because of the way the Omega-3 Fatty acids are supplied (they are attached to phosphatides) – has additional advantages over fish oils.

The Differences Between Krill Oil and Fish Oil

Here are the differences:

  1. Krill has phosphatidylcholine for memory – fish oils and most foods do not. About 90% of Americans fail to obtain adequate choline from their diet for their memory.
  2. Krill has Astaxanthin for the eyes and brain– it functions as an antioxidant to reduce inflammation and protect cells. Fish oils do not have Astaxanthin.
  3. Krill has phosphatides for memory – fish oils do not
  4. Krill’s fish oils are attached to phosphatides, protecting them from your digestive juices so they are much better absorbed. The capsule required is much smaller and easier to swallow; fish-sourced fish oils are attached to triglycerides, which do not protect them from your digestive juices so they are not absorbed as well. However, this does not apply to enteric coated fish oils; the coating protects them.
  5. Krill is very fresh – fish oils (if not enterically coated) are commonly oxidized. This does not apply to enterically coated fish oils, which are also protected from spoilage.
  6. Krill also supplies some omega-6 fatty acids for the immune system and omega-9 fatty acids for heart and brain health.
  7. Krill creates plasmalogens to protect the aging brain to a greater extent than fish oils. Antioxidant levels decline in the brain with age allowing free radicals to accumulate in the brain and these kill brain cells. Plasmalogens offer an alternative solution for protecting brain cells by functioning as a protective shield.
  8. Krill supplies glycerophospholipids to protect the cells in your brain from decay; these krill ingredients protect the structure of each brain cell.
  9. Both Krill and Fish Oils support the glymphatic system- the system that removes waste products with age. This system slows with age and Krill works better at rejuvenating it.
