Dairy and Soy-free, Non-GMO Healthy Bacteria by Jerry Hickey, R.Ph

Humans have about two pounds of bacteria in the intestines. Probiotic refers to the lactic acid producing strains required for overall health and digestion. The pressures of modern existence make it difficult to maintain a balanced population of normal, healthy microbes. Poor food choices, illness,

How the Immune System Functions by Jerry Hickey, R. Ph

How the Immune System Functions by Jerry Hickey, R. Ph

The purpose of the immune system is to keep infectious microbes such as dangerous bacteria, viruses, parasites and yeasts, out of the body, and to destroy any infectious microorganisms that do invade the body hopefully before they have time to cause infection and disease.

Immune system vitamins are important to support the body’s ability to fight off viruses that may enter your system and make you sick.

The immune system is made up of a complex and vital network of cells and organs that protect the body from infection. Specialized cells known as macrophages and neutrophils wrap around microbes engulfing them in a special chamber. The chamber then floods with acids dissolving the microbe. So when you are diagnosed with an infection and are under attack by a microbe the supplements in Table 1 improve the immune systems ability to contain these organisms.

Good immune system function is a balance between regulation and activity. At times, it may act inappropriately, identifying harmless substances such as a food or pollen as an invading microbe and this is the essence of an allergy. Another scenario is that the immune system may mount a persistent but mismanaged attack and this is what occurs in arthritic pain or in asthma; individuals with these conditions should choose from the correct nutrients in Table 2 to assist their therapy.

Jerry Hickey is a pharmacist and radio personality and fills the esteemed role of Scientific Director and President of Invite Health. He has spent his professional life analyzing nutritional information and medical studies with the aim of creating the highest quality and most natural nutraceuticals for user’s maximum health benefits. Here, Jerry speaks about the benefits of Green Tea!

There are thousands and thousands and thousands of studies on green tea. There isn’t a square inch of your body that doesn’t get some kind of benefit from green tea, whether you’re a kid or an adult or elderly. There isn’t a square inch of your body that will not benefit from it.

For instance, recently they’ve shown that green tea keeps you younger. People who drink a lot of green tea, biologically they’re seven years younger than people their same age who do not drink green tea. It’s because it keeps the genes healthy. It wakes the genes up. Just like your skin gets wrinkled, your genes get old and wrinkly and they don’t work well and that ages you. If your genes are younger, your body is younger. If the genes in your heart are younger, your heart is younger. If the genes in your muscles are younger, your muscles are stronger. If the genes in your brain are younger, your brain is younger. It’s as simple as that. They found that green tea keeps genes consistently working and younger. There’s a lot of interesting stuff you find about this beverage and it’s the second most commonly consumed beverage in the world after water.

Immune System Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has an effect on the immune system in your mouth. You release peroxidase in your saliva, which is like hydrogen peroxide, so if you eat a piece of food and there’s some mold on it or there’s bacteria or viruses, parasites, yeast, anything that enters your mouth, these things are able to isolate the bacteria and destroy it. That’s what they do. But also it stimulates something else; in your mouth, in your saliva, you release something called polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes are a type of white blood cell  packed with something called myeloperoxidases. It’s the job of myeloperoxidases to cleanse your food and cleanse your palate of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and yeast.

Weight Loss Benefits of Green Tea

Benefits of green tea, green teaThe studies on weight loss are pretty dynamic; there are a number of studies that show the benfits on green tea improving metabolism and helping to burn fat. These studies, like the study at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands, showed that when you consume enough green tea, you burn about 200 to 300 additional calories per day without changing your lifestyle or modifying your activity level, your exercise level or your diet. Simply by adding sufficient green tea to your diet will burn an additional minimum of 200 calories per day. Now, that has a good impact. I mean that could be like half an hour on the treadmill for some people. If you’re walking at a slower rate it could be 15 minutes for most people on a treadmill. So if you’re going to eat smart and you’re going to take a walk and then add green tea, you can really help keep your weight under control by getting rid of the fat. (Here’s another study that shows how Green tea burns calories and reduces body fat!)

Here’s another study from Maastricht University published in the journal Obesity Research – after intense dieting, participants gained 40% of their weight back within the next three months. But, the participants who were given a powerful, concentrated green tea every day, the study reported that they actually continued to lose weight.

Men were placed on a weight loss diet for two weeks and then added a green tea supplement to their diet. Some men were on a placebo and some men were on green tea supplements. This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that participants on green tea supplements had a significant drop in their weight, a smaller waist size, and less body fat within just three months. And they’ve also shown, by the way, if you take green tea before you exercise you may burn an additional 17 to 20% of fat.

When most people exercise, they’re burning the sugars that are stored in their muscle, called glycogen, not fat. When you use green tea, it kind of switches on a physiological trigger and instead of burning the sugar in your muscle, you’re burning fat.

Many individuals have a problem with overeating, especially around the holidays. A study published in the Nutrition Journal from Lund University in Sweden, showed that when researchers gave participants green tea after a meal, they felt much more satiated. It was helping to prevent hunger.

Age-Related Conditions

Green tea isn’t just for losing weight and it’s not just for the immune system in your mouth, though it’s nice to keep your immune system working, especially in the winter. Green tea may help with age-related disabilities. This is a very interesting study, because there are a number of separate studies that back it up. In a three-year-long study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, of over 14,000 elderly people, those who drank the most green tea had a big drop in the risk of functional disability. And what that means is the people who had the most green tea, remained the most independent – easier to get out of a chair, to cut their food, feed themselves, to get dressed on their own, to take a walk, and to drive their car.

Researchers at the Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences in Japan wanted to evaluate the ability of Green Tea to cut the risk of stroke in humans because research shows that the higher the intake of Green tea the lower the risk of stroke related death. Read that study by clicking here!

Why do I believe it? There are too many positive studies about the benefits of green tea to ignore it.
