We have all heard the saying, “you are what you eat”. But have you thought about what foods have common components? Interestingly enough, when we look at specific foods – apples, onions, berries, grapes, citrus fruits – they have a common component, called Quercetin. Quercetin is an extremely powerful flavonoid that provides the body with a significant amount of antioxidant power. This is important we want to be able to neutralize free radicals, that can damage cell membranes, damage our cellular DNA, leading to cell death. But the more antioxidants we have on board, the more we can fend off that type of oxidative stress and damage that can occur.
What is Quercetin?
Quercetin in a plant-based flavonoid, sometimes referred to as a citrus bioflavonoid, found naturally in some the healthiest known food sources, such as dark berries, organic tomatoes, and black tea. Generally speaking, we do not obtain a high enough amount of this antioxidant through our diet alone. Most individuals are not following a balanced diet that has adequate amounts of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables alone. To do this, a diet I would highly recommend is the Mediterranean Diet. The University of Maryland released a great breakdown, where they described the way in which Quercetin has been researched in terms of being able to help stabilize cells. This is extremely important because, when we think about histamine in the case of seasonal allergies or hives, Quercetin has been studied in the stabilization of the cells that release histamine in the body, demonstrating an anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine effect. “In the setting of asthma, allergies, hay fever, hives it has been shown that Quercetin has been very beneficial,” according to researchers. This scientific research has also demonstrated the link between Quercetin and cardiovascular health. Its powerful flavonoids have been shown to protect against the damage caused by elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. Quercetin has also been shown to support urinary tract and prostate health.†
Research on Quercetin
Published in the journal Frontiers of Immunology, a couple of different universities are currently studying Quercetin and Vitamin C’s impact on the COVID-19 virus – Eastern Virginia Medical School, a major university in Italy and Saint Peter’s Hospital in England. They are “presenting current evidence for the utilization of Vitamin C and Quercetin, both for prophylactic and high risk populations as well as for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.” This is something that we should all keep our eyes on!†

Vitamin C is so incredibly useful and important. You need it for so many functions throughout your body, including making connective tissue. If you don’t have enough in your diet, you could develop scurvy. You need this essential vitamin to utilize the calories from food as energy. Let’s discuss all of the benefits and functions of Vitamin C.
What exactly is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is an essential vitamin, which means you need it for multiple functions in your body but your body does not make it. It must be acquired by food or supplements. Foods that contain high amounts include berries and citrus fruits. But, as you grow older you need additional Vitamin C to maintain your health. There are different types – ascorbic acid, calcium ascorbate and ester-c. There are not that many differences between them. It does interact favorably with the polyphenols (antioxidants) found in fruits and vegetables. The recommended dietary allowance is 90mg per day.

Why is this essential vitamin so important?
Overall, numerous studies have shown that regularly using Vitamin C supplements shortens the duration of the common cold. It is prophylactic, meaning you take it before; taking a supplement when you already are sick does not mean much. Other studies have shown that when you mix Vitamin C with Vitamin D, Zinc and Probiotics, it’s even better for the immune system. Diabetics and smokers can greatly benefit from taking a Vitamin C supplement.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences from Children’s Hospital Research Center in Oakland, California performed a two year long study that concluded that Vitamin C may prevent symptoms from respiratory diseases, including cystic fibrosis and asthma.†
APAC, or the Asia-Pacific Partnership reports mounting research on Vitamin C role in cancer and infection may change treatment methods. The evidence is pretty prominent that this essential vitamin has a therapeutic effect for the immune system.†

How is Vitamin C utilized in our bodies?
As mentioned, you need this vitamin to create Carnitine. Vitamin C interacts with iron and changes a couple of ingredients from the protein you eat into Carnitine. There are different amino acids in protein. Two of them – Lysine and Thianine – interact with this essential vitamin in separate steps to create Carnitine. Carnitine is needed for muscle energy and muscle strength, for brain energy and for heart energy. It allows you to take the ingredients from food and convert it into energy. But it also helps you clear the toxins out of your cells.
Vitamin C also interacts with dietary protein in order to create Collagen. Collagen makes your skin, hair and nails so, in turn, lacking it effects your skin, hair and nails. This is why Vitamin C is also a very popular skin care ingredient. It interacts with protein to create ligaments and tendons, as well.
