General Heart Health as We Age

General Heart Health as We Age
Dr. Claire Arcidiacono, ND
I have talked about how we can keep both our cholesterol levels and blood pressure healthy as we age. But what if your heart is already healthy? How do you keep your heart healthy as you age? Well there are a number of nutrients that I recommend for your heart. In this blog we will get into exactly what these nutrients are and exactly why I recommend them! It’s a lot to cover so let’s get into it, shall we?
I want to start with one of my favorite heart health nutrients. Coq10 is an essential fat soluble nutrient. It comes in 2 forms, ubiquinone and ubiquinol. Both of these are CoQ10 However that being said there is a difference between the two nutrients. Ubiquinone is a storage from of CoQ10 and Ubiquinol is the active form. What does this all mean?? It basically means that Ubiquinone has to be changed to Ubiquinol in the body. In my clinical experience as we age we slowly become less proficient at this process and thus I recommend the Ubiquinol form. CoQ10 has a number of benefits for overall health. When it comes to our heart it is very beneficial. Studies have found that supplementing with CoQ10 can “significantly improve moderate to severe heart failure”. Studies have also found that CoQ10 can have other potential benefits for other heart muscle diseases. Studies have also found that CoQ10 can help lower total cholesterol and triglycerides level (this is especially true for those with PCOS). Speaking of cholesterol CoQ10 is important to help protect our muscles from damage if you are taking a statin drug. (1) I have found in my clinical experience that CoQ10 can also help with blood pressure. In fact in one study it was found after 12 weeks of CoQ10 use that systolic blood pressure was lowered to normal levels. CoQ!0 was also found to help with CAD, heart attack risk, reduce risk of blood clots and even help with arrhythmias! (2) There are so many benefits jut to heart health that I can’t even list them all! CoQ10 Ubiquinol is available from invite in both 60mg and 120mg! CoQ10 Ubiquinone is available from Invite in chewable from in our Oral Q10 formula.
Omega 3’s are a type of fat that our bodies need to function but we can’t actually make. This means we must get in in either your diet or in supplement form. Omega 3’s are found in fish oil, Krill oil and even flax seeds! Fish oil has been found to significantly reduce blood triglyceride levels. They can also help to increase HDL levels! Fish oil can also help with blood pressure. And let’s snot forget how good Omega 3’s are for inflammation. (3) Some studies have found that Omega 3’s can help reduce the risk of arthrosclerosis and even stabilize and reduce plaque buildup. (4) Omega 3’s can be found in Invite Health’s Fish Oil, Krill Oil Advanced and Biomega formulas.
Magnesium is one of my favorite supplements to recommend for almost every situation that you can think of! If you have read any of my prior blogs you know how often magnesium comes up. Magnesium has many benefits for our overall health but let’s just focus on heart health for now, shall we? Magnesium has been found to be helpful in reducing blood pressure. It can also help to lower damage from oxidation after a myocardial infection. Magnesium can also help reduce the risks of a blood clot. It can also reduce the risk of aFib especially following coronary artery bypass grafting. Studies have also found a link between magnesium intake and a reduction in the risk of both coronary heart disease and even strokes. Lastly studies have found that magnesium can help increase HDL and lower triglycerides. (5) As you can see magnesium is a winner for heart health. Magnesium can be found In Invite’s Magnesium Glycinate, Citrate and BioAvail formula. Bone Powder also contains 400 mg of this amazing nutrient!
- Resveratrol – yes it’s good for our heart!
Resveratrol is one of those trendy supplements that everyone talks about when it comes to anti-aging. But resveratrol is much more than just an antioxidant to keep you looking young. It’s a powerhouse for heart health. Resveratrol has been found to be helpful in reducing the risk of conditions such as atherosclerosis, ischemia – reperfusion injury and even heart failure! Resveratrol can also help with reducing the risks of blood clots. Resveratrol is also important for mitochondria, which produce’s the power that all muscles (including the heart) need to work properly! Resveratrol can also help cholesterol by reducing total levels, LDL levels and increasing HDL levels. Even blood pressure has been found to be positively affected by resveratrol. (6) Please see Invite’s Resveratrol Hx and Resveratrol Max!
D Ribose simply put helps to give the heart energy so it can work better! D Ribose has been found to help with CHF. It can also help with symptoms of coronary artery disease and works to improve the recovery of myocardial function after ischemia. What does this mean? It means that if blood flow to the heart is reduced for any reason D ribose can help with recovery. (7) D Ribose is found in Invite Health’s Ribose Complex and Multi Energy Powder. Please check out my blog on this amazing heart health formula!
Invite Health has so many amazing nutrients for heart health as we age. These are my top 5 nutrients because as you can see they really hit many of the concerns that can occur as we age. In my experience they can help keep our heart healthy as we age. For anyone with a family history of heart disease any or even all of these nutrients can be a great addition to your supplement regime!
